Whole Interval Recording - 40 Hour RBT® Online Training

Whole Interval Recording

Whole Interval Recording is a time-sampling technique where the observer records whether a behavior occurs throughout the entire duration of a pre-determined interval. The interval is marked as “+” if the behavior was present for the entire interval, and marked as “−” if the behavior was absent at any point during the interval. This method is often used when the goal is to increase behaviors that should persist over time, such as staying on-task.

Example

A teacher is observing a student’s on-task behavior during a 30-minute class period using 5-minute intervals. If the student stays on-task (e.g., reading quietly) for the entire 5-minute interval, the teacher records a “+”. If the student is off-task at any point during the interval, the teacher marks a “−”. This technique helps measure how consistently the student remains on-task over time.
