Information

What is a RBT®?

The Registered Behavior TechnicianTM (RBT®) is a paraprofessional who practices under the close, ongoing supervision< of a BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D. The RBT is primarily responsible for the direct implementation of services. The RBT does not design intervention or assessment plans. It is the responsibility of the RBT Supervisor to determine which tasks an RBT may perform as a function of his or her training, experience, and competence. The BACB certificant supervising the RBT is responsible for the work performed by the RBT on the cases they are overseeing.

For more information see the BACB website

Who Can Become a RBT®?

Applicants must be 18 years of age, possess a minimum of a high school diploma or national equivalent, and complete a background check. I do not check these requirements prior to allowing someone to join the course, however they will be checked when you turn in your application to take the RBT® exam.  If you have a question as to whether you meet these requirements you should email the BACB directly.

For more information see the BACB website

How do I become a RBT®?

The first step towards becoming a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is to complete a 40-hour training program, which is provided here.

After completing the training, the second step is to pass a competency exam, you will need to find a supervisor to complete your competency exam.

The next important step is to secure a supervisor, as 5% of your working hours as an RBT need to be supervised. Typically, the person who administers your competency exam becomes your supervisor, or another BCBA or BCaBA in your company. However, you need to identify a supervisor as part of your application for the exam, because working as an RBT requires supervision.

Once you have a supervisor, you can move on to the next step, which is to complete the online RBT certification application. You will need to submit the certificate of completion from the training program, as well as other documentation, as outlined on the BACB website.

The BACB will then ask your supervisor to confirm your age and that you have completed a background check. Once these steps are completed, you will need to pay the fees associated with the certification.

If your application is accepted by the BACB, you will be able to register for the RBT exam at a Pearson center.

After passing the exam, you will officially become a Registered Behavior Technician.

What does it cost to become a RBT®?

The course itself is priced at $30. While there may be an optional competency exam fee, if you start applying for RBT positions now, you will find a BCBA, who works for the company you are hired with, will likely administer your competency exam at no additional cost. Keep in mind, there is an application fee of $50, and the RBT exam carries a cost of $45.
