Token economies - 40 Hour RBT® Online Training

Token economies

A Token Economy is a system of reinforcement in which individuals earn tokens, points, or other symbolic representations for engaging in desirable behaviors. These tokens can later be exchanged for backup reinforcers, such as privileges, activities, or tangible items. The token system helps bridge the gap between the desired behavior and the delivery of the reinforcer, maintaining motivation over time.

Example

In a classroom, students earn tokens for completing homework, following instructions, or helping peers. Once a student earns a certain number of tokens, they can exchange them for a reward, such as extra recess time or a small prize from the class store. The tokens themselves hold no value but act as a medium to access the backup reinforcers.
