Social Validity

Social Validity refers to the extent to which the goals, procedures, and outcomes of an intervention are meaningful, acceptable, and relevant to the individual receiving the intervention, as well as to the stakeholders (e.g., parents, teachers, and caregivers). It ensures that the behavior change strategies and outcomes not only align with evidence-based practices but also hold value in the real world and positively impact the individual’s quality of life.

Example

A behavior analyst designs a behavior plan to reduce a student’s outbursts in class by teaching alternative communication strategies. To assess social validity, the behavior analyst asks the student’s parents and teachers for feedback on whether the intervention’s goals (e.g., decreasing outbursts), methods (e.g., communication training), and outcomes (e.g., improved classroom behavior) are appropriate and beneficial for the student. If the intervention is deemed helpful and improves the student’s experience, it has high social validity.
