Most to Least Prompt Fading (MTL)

Most-to-Least Prompt Fading is a strategy where the most intrusive prompt (e.g., physical guidance) is provided at the start of instruction to ensure the learner makes the correct response. Over time, the prompts are gradually faded out, meaning less assistance is given as the learner becomes more independent.

Example

A teacher is teaching a child to wash their hands. Initially, the teacher uses full physical prompts by guiding the child’s hands through each step of the process. As the child begins to learn, the teacher reduces the level of prompting by moving to a verbal prompt, such as saying, “Turn on the water,” and then eventually no prompts at all.
