Momentary Time Sampling (MTS) - 40 Hour RBT® Online Training

Momentary Time Sampling (MTS)

Momentary Time Sampling (MTS) is an observation method used to record whether a specific behavior occurs or does not occur at the precise moment an interval ends. This method involves observing the learner at the end of each interval and marking a “+” if the behavior is happening at that moment or a “−” if it is not.

Example

A teacher is observing a student’s on-task behavior during a 30-minute class period. The teacher sets a timer to go off every 5 minutes. When the timer beeps, the teacher looks up to see if the student is paying attention (on-task behavior) at that moment. If the student is on-task, the teacher records a “+”. If the student is off-task, the teacher records a “−”.
