Least-to-Most Prompt Fading (LTM)

Least-to-Most Prompt Fading is a strategy where prompts are given in a sequence from the least intrusive to the most intrusive. Initially, minimal assistance is provided, and more intrusive prompts (e.g., verbal, gestural, physical) are added only if the learner does not respond correctly. This method allows the learner to attempt the task as independently as possible before receiving additional support.

Example

If a teacher is helping a student learn to tie their shoes, they may start by giving a verbal prompt, like “Tie your shoes.” If the student does not begin, the teacher might then provide a gestural prompt, such as pointing to the laces. If further assistance is needed, the teacher may use a physical prompt, guiding the student’s hands to tie the shoes.
