Inter-response time (IRT) - 40 Hour RBT® Online Training

Inter-response time (IRT)

Inter-response time (IRT) is the amount of time that elapses between the end of one occurrence of a behavior and the start of the next occurrence of that same behavior. IRT is often used to measure the temporal spacing of behavior, helping to understand the pattern or rate of responses over time.

Example

Imagine you’re observing a child in a classroom who raises their hand to ask questions. If the child raises their hand at 10:05 AM and then raises their hand again at 10:10 AM, the inter-response time would be 5 minutes. To measure IRT, you would start a timer when the child lowers their hand after the first question and stop it when the child raises their hand for the next question.
