Gestural Prompt - 40 Hour RBT® Online Training

Gestural Prompt

A Gestural Prompt is a type of prompt used in teaching or behavior interventions where the trainer uses physical gestures or movements to guide the learner toward the correct response. These prompts are nonverbal and involve actions such as pointing, nodding, or signaling, which help the learner understand what behavior or response is expected without the use of direct physical assistance or verbal instructions.

Example

A teacher is helping a student named Sarah learn how to clean up her toys after playtime. Instead of verbally telling Sarah to pick up the toys, the teacher uses a gestural prompt by pointing to the toys on the floor. Sarah looks at where the teacher is pointing and starts picking up the toys without further prompting. Over time, as Sarah becomes more independent in cleaning up, the teacher reduces the gestures and eventually removes them altogether, allowing Sarah to clean up on her own.
