Continuous Reinforcement Schedule (CRF, FR1)

Continuous Reinforcement (CRF), also referred to as Fixed Ratio 1 (FR1), is a reinforcement schedule in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) where every instance of a target behavior is reinforced. This means that each time the behavior occurs, it is followed by a reinforcing consequence, making it a highly effective schedule for teaching new behaviors or strengthening weak behaviors. CRF leads to rapid learning because the learner receives immediate feedback for each correct response.

Example

A teacher is teaching a student to raise their hand before speaking. Using continuous reinforcement (FR1), the teacher provides immediate praise every single time the student raises their hand. For instance, every time the student raises their hand instead of calling out, the teacher says, “Great job raising your hand!” This consistent reinforcement encourages the student to repeat the behavior, helping them learn the correct way to participate in class discussions.
