Behavior Momentum (High Probability Sequence; High P Sequence)

A High Probability (High-p) Sequence, also known as Behavior Momentum, is a strategy used in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) that involves presenting a series of instructions or tasks with a high probability of the learner’s compliance (tasks the learner is likely to complete) before presenting a more challenging or lower-probability task (one the learner typically avoids or resists). The momentum created by the successful completion of easier tasks increases the likelihood of compliance with the more difficult task.

Example

A therapist is working with a child named Jake who often resists putting on his shoes, a low-probability behavior. To increase compliance, the therapist starts by giving Jake three high-probability requests that he typically follows, such as “give me a high five,” “touch your nose,” and “stand up.” Jake quickly complies with all three requests, building positive momentum. Immediately after these successful responses, the therapist gives the low-probability request: “put on your shoes.” Since Jake has built up momentum through the easy tasks, he is more likely to comply with the request to put on his shoes.
