Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)

A Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) is a formal, individualized plan designed to address problematic behaviors by outlining specific strategies to reduce the undesirable behavior and teach new, more appropriate behaviors. The BIP is typically based on the results of a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and includes details about the targeted behaviors, the identified function(s) of those behaviors, and strategies for modifying the environment, teaching alternative skills, and reinforcing positive behavior. The ultimate goal of a BIP is to improve the individual’s quality of life by reducing problematic behaviors and promoting functional, socially appropriate behaviors.

Example

A Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) was created for 8-year-old Liam, who frequently hits other students during group activities. The Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) revealed that Liam’s hitting behavior was attention-seeking, as he would often receive scolding or physical redirection from teachers and reactions from peers. The BIP included several strategies: providing Liam with consistent, structured opportunities to gain attention in positive ways, such as raising his hand or using a “help card”; reinforcing these appropriate behaviors with praise and small rewards when used during group time; and implementing antecedent strategies like offering Liam a visual schedule of activities to reduce frustration during transitions. Teachers were instructed to ignore the hitting as much as safely possible and only provide attention when Liam engaged appropriately, while tracking his behavior daily to monitor progress.
