Abolishing Operation (AO) - 40 Hour RBT® Online Training

Abolishing Operation (AO)

This refers to a procedure that decreases the value or effectiveness of a specific stimulus or behavior through satiation.

Example

An example of an abolishing operation (AO) would be the concept of food satiation in a behavior-analytic context. If someone has just eaten a large meal, the value of food as a reinforcer decreases. As a result, they are less likely to engage in behaviors that were previously reinforced by access to food, such as preparing a snack. This is because the motivation to seek food has been reduced due to satiation.
