Information about the RBT Certification

What is a RBT®?

A Registered Behavior Technician™ (RBT®) is a paraprofessional who delivers direct Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services under the ongoing supervision of a BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D. RBTs work closely with supervising behavior analysts to implement behavior intervention plans, support skill acquisition, and collect data used to guide treatment decisions.

RBTs do not conduct assessments or design intervention plans. All programming decisions are made by the supervising behavior analyst, who determines which tasks an RBT may perform based on training, experience, and demonstrated competence. The supervising BACB certificant is responsible for the services delivered by the RBT, ensuring ethical, evidence-based ABA practice and compliance with professional standards.

Who Can Become a RBT®?

Anyone who meets the basic eligibility requirements established by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board® (BACB®) can pursue certification as a Registered Behavior Technician™ (RBT®). The RBT credential is designed for individuals interested in working directly with clients and supporting Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services under supervision.

To become a RBT®, individuals must:

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent

  • Complete a 40-hour RBT training program aligned with the current RBT Task List

  • Pass a criminal background check as required by the BACB®

  • Successfully complete an RBT Competency Assessment with a qualified supervisor

  • Pass the RBT certification exam

RBTs come from a wide range of backgrounds, including education, psychology, childcare, healthcare, and human services. No prior ABA experience is required to begin training, making the RBT credential an accessible entry point into the field of behavior analysis.
