Functional Analysis (FA)

A Functional Analysis (FA) Assessment is a systematic method used in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to identify the function of a specific behavior. This process involves manipulating the environment to observe how different conditions influence the occurrence of the behavior. The goal is to determine whether the behavior is maintained by attention, escape, access to tangibles, or automatic reinforcement. By understanding the function of the behavior, behavior analysts can create effective, individualized intervention plans.

Example

A behavior analyst is working with a student who frequently yells during class. To identify the function of the yelling behavior, the analyst conducts a functional analysis by setting up different test conditions that might reinforce the behavior:
