Socially Mediated Negative Reinforcement

A student frequently complains about a difficult math assignment, and each time the teacher responds by allowing the student to take a break or giving them easier work. The student’s behavior of complaining is socially mediated negative reinforcement because the teacher’s actions remove the aversive task (the difficult math assignment), making the student more likely to complain in the future to avoid the task.

Example

Socially mediated negative reinforcement involves a behavior that is reinforced through the removal of an aversive stimulus, with the help of another person. This type of reinforcement is commonly observed in settings where individuals engage in behaviors to escape or avoid tasks, situations, or demands, and someone else intervenes to help remove the unpleasant conditions. Understanding this concept is important in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) for designing effective interventions to reduce escape-maintained behaviors.
